Flat Stanley Theatre Costume
Date
2022
Project type
Costume Design, Costume Construction, Theater Experience
For this project I was asked by my theatre teacher to create a specialty costume for our production of Flat Stanley. For this production I also designed and executed all the lighting from start to finish and for every run of the show.
This costume needed to: give a flat appearance, be relatively comfortable for the actor, be able to be changed into in less than a minute, and be able to come off within seconds. With that in mind I decided on creating the costume out of EVA foam and covering it in fabric to give the look of flattened clothes and the flexibility required for comfort and movability. The foam was backed with segments of cardboard for added structure and rigidness. Straps (similar in arrangement to a hiking back page) were added to secure the torso, as well as to the arms and legs. The whole strap system featured buckles which allowed for a quick change in, but an even quicker change out. In total, the costume was fully able to support the quick changes, walking, running, and tap dancing of the actor.
