I was tasked designing and constructing a tearaway dress for a production of Mean Girls the Musical in March. The dress needed to rip away and reveal regular clothes underneath the halloween costume. The dress needed to hold together for a whole song where Cady paces around the stage before being ripped off in the middle of the next song. I designed the dress as well as the system of magnets that allows it to tear away by being pulled from the back. I utilized magnets (intended for wallets) that had plastic edges allowing them to be sewn to fabrics. The look of the dress is a nonspecific corpse bride type look which contrasts the other costumes on stage.
