Heathers Set Design

Date

2023

Project type

Design, Thespians Competition

In my Senior Year, for an entry into the Florida Thespians Competition in the Scenic Design category, I designed a set for the musical Heathers. To create the set, I 3D modeled it and later 3D printed it at 1:24 scale. The model was designed specifically to fit in my school’s auditorium. The set is designed to emulate the exaggerated and heightened nature of heathers as well as the recurring school atmosphere. The design also allows for the dynamic and changing scenes that are featured throughout. I designed the set to have two floors, staircases, onstage doors, sliding lockers, and three large grand arches. These arches emphasize the iconography of the show with there being three and also the elevated and impending presence that the Heathers possess (as if they are changing the architecture of the school itself). These arches allow for dynamic lighting opportunities throughout the show and are designed in such a way that it is possible to recreate them using the school's existing lighting setup. The sliding lockers are a quick way to “de-school” the set and provide an obvious change in setting (in conjunction with small set pieces). These locker sections have slots for flats to be slid in and out from backstage hiding and revealing the upstage lockers throughout scene changes to and away from the school.

At District competition this design received a Superior rating (highest rating level) and Honorable Mention (picked as one of the strongest entries the judges saw for the category).
