Clue: On Stage Costume Design
Date
2023
Project type
Costume Design, Thespians Competition
In my Senior Year, for an entry into the Florida Thespians Competition in the Costume Design Category I created 5 Designs for the show Clue: on Stage. I tackled the entire design process from start to finish. I avoided seeing what was already done for the show; pretending I was starting from scratch. I read the script and took notes on “vibe” and costume requirements. The setting for the show is 1950’s America and I stuck firmly to this period. Each character had sourced information from the time period, whether that be an actress, object, iconography or a combination. Within the show, each character was keeping a secret, so each design reflects either their specific secret or the act of deceit and secret keeping as a whole. Each character takes a large inspiration from a real garment from 1950s America (Mostly sourced from the MET fashion archive) to give them a certain authenticity.
At District competition these designs received a Superior rating (highest rating level), Top Honors (for receiving a perfect score), and Honorable Mention (picked as one of the strongest entries the judges saw for the category).
